Excited to share that Greece is at the forefront of Quantum & Secure communications with the upgrade of 3 Observatories into Optical Ground Stations (OGSs) connected to Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs) in Athens, Thessaloniki and Heraklion, Crete, under the HellasQCI project – the National Quantum Communication Infrastructure of Greece.

HellasQCI marks the first deployment of quantum communication networks in Greece, promising significant advancements for researchers, academia and the respective industry.

These efforts, aligned with the EU’s space policy, underscore Greece’s commitment to enhancing security, and technological autonomy in Europe.

As Deputy Minister K.Kyranakis of the Greek Ministry of Digital Governance stated at the EU Ministers of Competitiveness Meeting on 28 and 29 November 2024 in Brussels:

Europe needs full autonomy in four key areas:

  1. Satellite manufacturing
  2. Autonomy in launching
  3. Earth observation technologies
  4. Secure and reliable communications

And this is why Greece is manufacturing 13 satellites, that will be in orbit by 2026. And this is why Greece is upgrading 3 observatories for quantum and secure communications”
