The European Commission and the European Space Agency (ESA) have signed an agreement to advance the implementation of the European Quantum Communication Infrastructure (EuroQCI). This initiative aims to establish a quantum-safe communication network across the EU and its territories by integrating terrestrial fiber optics with satellite systems. The network will enhance the security of critical infrastructures, such as hospitals, energy grids, and governmental institutions, against quantum and classical cyber threats.
Under the agreement, ESA will lead the design and implementation of the space segment through its SAGA initiative, supported by €138 million in EU funding. EuroQCI aligns with the EU’s Competitiveness Compass, fostering investments in secure digital infrastructures and advancing Europe’s leadership in quantum technologies.
This agreement is a significant milestone for the EuroQCI initiative and the HellasQCI project, which is part of EuroQCI and focuses on deploying Greece’s national quantum communication infrastructure. This important EuroQCI implementation agreement ensures a coordinated effort toward building a secure, quantum-safe communication network in the European Union and will play a crucial role in ensuring that Europe’s transition to the emerging quantum era is both seamless and successful.
