HellasQCI and Nokia lead way to the future of Quantum-Safe Networks, April 22-24, 2024
HellasQCI project, coordinated by The National Infrastructures for Research and Technology – GRNET, operating under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Digital Governance, participated at NOKIA’s landmark Wavelength event, on 22-24 April 2024, at InterContinental Athenaeum Athens, Greece.
The event served as an excellent opportunity to showcase the progress achieved in the HellasQCI project, including the groundbreaking Proof of Concept (PoC) implemented by HellasQCI (GRNET, NKUA) in partnership with Nokia, EvolutionQ, and IDQ.
During the second day of the event, HellasQCI project representatives, Dr. Ilias Papastamatiou, GRNET, HellasQCI Project Coordinator, and Ass. Prof. George T. Kanellos, NKUA, HellasQCI Technical Coordinator, participated in two different sessions.
Dr. Ilias Papastamatiou, delivered a talk at the plenary session titled “Quantum-safe Networks: Bridging Theory and Practice” and Assistant Professor George T. Kanellos presented the topic: “The Athens PoC Quantum Secure Network”.
The plenary session served as a connecting bridge between theory and practice around Quantum Communications Technologies showcasing the practical implementation within Quantum Networks, with a specific focus on the contributions made by the HellasQCI project in building Greece’s National Quantum Communication Infrastructure, and referencing the results of the PoC in a real field deployment testbed.
The topology includes a 3-node full ring configuration between GRNET and NKUA in Athens (max distance 45km), where every node is a fully integrated vertical stack featuring 3-layers: a Quantum layer, a Key Management System (KMS) layer and an Application layer where Optical transport network security (OTN-Sec) is performed.
The PoC was a joint collaboration between the HellasQCI consortium (GRNET and NKUA), NOKIA, IDQ and EvolutionQ.
These results demonstrated the feasibility and the benefits of QKD networks for securing critical communications in Greece and Europe.
