The latest progress related to the HellasQCI project was presented by Dr. Manolis Xilouris, Νational Observatory of Athens and a key contributor in the space-segment development for the HellasQCI project, on October 24, 2024 at ICSO2024, one of the largest global gatherings of experts in Optical, Optoelectronic, and Photonic Technologies for space applications, co-organised by ESA and CNES.
In his presentation, Dr. Manolis Xilouris, emphasized the pivotal role of the Helmos Optical Ground Station (OGS) in the HellasQCI project and detailed how its integration into the terrestrial Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) segment under the framework of EuroQCI is paving the way for secure quantum communication.
The conference offered an excellent opportunity to bring together the Space Optics Community and exchange information and ideas on the Research, Development, Qualification and Flight Experience of using optical technologies for space missions. Technology experts meet Mission experts to address the lessons learnt from past developments and identify the next significant developments in employing lightwave technologies and techniques used in all types of Space Missions.
The National Observatory of Athens is leading Task T4.5, which focuses on developing use cases involving the space segment of the project. Leveraging its advanced infrastructure, such as the “Aristarchos” telescope and experienced personnel, NOA collaborates with partners like AUTH and FORTH to support the project’s goals in secure quantum communication.
